The largest pre-Hispanic city (26,500 inhabitants) was the religious and administrative capital of the kingdom of Gran Chimu (1100 and 1500 AD). Built over an area of 8 miles², its walls reach 12 metres in height and present splendid relief decorations with geometrical patterns and profiled zoomorphic designs. A Unesco world heritage site since 1986, it is divided into several sectors: administrative, residential, funerary, in addition to gardens, palaces and foodstores.
