Cuzco, the "navel of the earth" in Quechua, was founded in the XIIc and harmoniously associates Inca to Spanish architecture. All the buildings were built on Inca foundations, characterized by wonderfully skilled stone work. On Plaza de Armas, the main square, the baroque façade of Compañia church is one of the most beautiful on the continent. Santo Domingo convent, built on the old Sun temple, shelters some remains of the ancient civilization. From the remains of Sacsahuaman, on the city heights, a scenery of dusky mountains and of Cuzco huddling in the valley will unfold ahead of you.
