Peru's major cities are on the list of Unesco world heritage sites for their cultural and architectural richness. They are a token, firstly of the Incas' past imperial influence, and secondly of the colonial era's miscegenation. Lima, founded by conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535 displays, in particular, exceptional baroque and Renaissance-style palaces.
