The worship of the Virgin of Carmen, patron saint of Mestizos, takes shape as colourful processions of her image in the streets of the village of Paucartambo, almost 3,000 m in altitude and 100 miles away from Cuzco. Music and choirs singing in Quechua, recount the various steps of the country's history. On the main day, the Virgin blesses the inhabitants and scares away the demons, who perform risky somersaults on the town's roofs. The festival, which takes place from July 15th to 16th, ends with the war against demons, from which the believers come out triumphant.
