Located smack bang between Borneo and Manila, the long, thin, snake-like island of Palawan is blessed with lush vegetation and an almost untouched beauty. The beaches are the highlight though, especially those in the north of the island around the Bacuit archipelago. Another huge tourist attraction is the Sabang underground river, a must-see on your way up to El Nido. Parts of the island are difficult to travel on due to unpaved roads, but these are improving. The capital Puerto Princesa is a lovely spot to spend a few days; a quiet and clean town with a laidback ambiance, great restaurants and friendly locals. (Picture credit: Apulid Island)
