The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (commissioned under the Spaniards at the time) discovered the island of Cebu island in 1565. Cebu then became the central point of Christian worship for the whole country. This is, consequently, where you will find the Basilica of Santo Niño and the symbol of Cebu, Magellan's Cross.
