The local wildlife consists of wild species such as the lynx, chamois, wild cat, stag and black stork, in addition to the classic European species such as the hare, boar and fox. The European bison, threatened with extinction, is protected in the Bialowieza forest. Wolves and brown bears live up high mountains.
