Polish cuisine is rich and varied and typical of Central Europe. For starters, there is often herring, prepared in oil or cream; cold cuts; soups such as borscht, chlodnik (cold soup) or zurek (rye flour sour soup). For main courses, there is a choice of pierogis (meat, mushroom or cottage cheese pies); pyzies (potato and meat balls); bigos (beef, prune and mushroom sauerkraut) or zrazy (stuffed beef roll served with buckwheat). The main desserts are poppy seed cake or cheese cake and jam doughnuts. As for drinks, Poland is reputed for its brandy and vodka, such as "Polonaise" or "Zubrowska". Restaurants serve food all day long in Poland.
