Gdansk Gdansk was rebuilt exactly the same following the war and some of its remarkably well-preserved historic remains, which definitely give the city a certain charm, can still be seen today. © O.T. Pologne
Gdansk, in the north of the country and on the Baltic coast, is the cradle of the Solidarity union which put an end to 45 years of communism. 90% of the city was destroyed during the war, but it was faithfully rebuilt. From the High Gate, walk along the Royal Way and admire the old merchants' houses before reaching the Golden Gate, a sort of triumphal arch. On Long Market square, stop and have a look at Neptune's fountain (17th century) and do not miss the City Hall and its tower, which is topped with a statue of King Sigismund II Augustus, from which you can admire a magnificent panorama of the city. The interior is certainly worth seeing; the ceiling of the Red Hall is decorated with 25 of Isaac Van Den Block's paintings.
