In the Algarve, the mountain barrier Serra de Monchique protects the region from the winds of the Atlantic therefore favouring, thanks to its humid climate, the blossoming of tropical plants such as banana trees as well as other ?continental' plants (rhododendrons and oaks characteristic of temperate Europe). However, this region is most of all Mediterranean, hence the presence of immense orchards of figs, almonds, oranges, lemons, with the scent of pine and eucalyptus around them.
