In the Algarve, the mountain barrier Serra de Monchique protects the region from the winds of the Atlantic therefore favouring, thanks to its humid climate, the blossoming of tropical plants such as banana trees as well as other ?continental' plants (rhododendrons and oaks characteristic of temperate Europe).
