Started in 1388 after a victorious battle, the building of Bathala monastery was not finished until 1521. It is the symbol of national independence. Made entirely of fine limestone, it is a masterpiece of the Gothic and Manueline styles. Inside the church, stained glass windows depicting scenes of the lives of the Virgin Mary and Christ date back to the Manueline era. On the right as you walk in, the founder's chapel houses John I and his wife Philippa de Lancastre's tombs. To the other side of the church, explore the Royal Cloister, Alfonso V's cloister and the chapter house housing the Unknown Soldier's tomb.
