Embroidery Having been introduced by the English, embroidery is now an integral part of Madeiran culture. © Elsa Dafour
The first embroidery production began in 1850 by the English, and the art quickly took hold and became a specialty of Madeira. Today there are some 10,000 embroiderers on the islands, but it is nowadays rare to see the craft being handed down to the younger generations. All over the island one can find embroidered table cloths, serviettes and children's clothes. Each piece shows exceptional craftsmanship and is the result of hours of work. In Funchal it's possible to visit a craftsman's workshop and see how the embrodiery is produced.
