In the region of Minho (in the north), Guimaraes was the first capital city of the kingdom of Portugal (in 1139). The city has retained its medieval district, which is pleasant to explore on foot. The paved street, rua de Santa Maria, lined with old houses, starts from the main square, largo do Oliveira, and ends at the castle, on the heights. The castle, castelo de São Miguel, is one beautiful example of a medieval fortress with a massive square keep and crenellated towers. Additionally, do not miss out on the paço dos Duques (Duke's Palace), or its little museum displaying some beautiful masterpieces.
