Machico, lying east of the capital, is a historic seaside town with numerous religious monuments, such as the main church adorned with paintings and azulejos, and the Nossa Senhora chapel. The forts of Nossa Senhora do Amparo and Sao Jaoa Baptista are rather impressive.
