Ponta Delgada on São Miguel is the capital of the Azores. The port has long been an important one on the route between Europe and America. For sightseeing go to the square of Gonçalo Velho Cabral, the fort of São Bras, the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Esperança where you can see the Christ of Miracles and the 16th century white limestone church of São Sebastião, famous for its gate in Manuelin style.
