Santa Maria's Monestry, Alcobaça This Mediaeval Roman Catholic Monastery was founded in 1153 EasyVoyage ©
Founded in 1153 by Alphonse Henriques, this Cistercian monastery is one of Europe's most impressive. It is made up of three different parts: the church (Portugal's largest), the north wing housing the King and his court's apartments, and the south wing for the abbot and monks' rooms. Inside the church, you will see Ines de Castro and Peter the First's tombs. Adjoining the church, you can admire the cloister, which is silent, austere and elegant, built in the 14th century under the reign of King Denis.
