Religious monuments Some of Madeira's religious monuments are really quite heavily decorated. © Igor Lubinetsky
Manueline art and baroque style are prominent in the religious monuments and forts. In Funchal, the cathedral, known as 'Sé' boasts ivory encrusted wooden paneling which helps to highlight the gilded surroundings. Dating from the 15th century, it was constructed out of a reddy brown lava. At the top of the town, the fortress of Saõ João Pico, which dates back to the 17th century, is worth a visit as much for its architecture as for its sweeping views of the areas below, namely the port and the ocean.
