The highest peak in Madeira, the Pico Ruivo rises to an altitude of 6,105ft and lies at the heart of the island. You can get to the summit following the tracks starting at the Pico de Arieiro which is a good 3 hour hike. Get there early in the morning to avoid the low lying clouds that usually gather by the afternoon. Above the Pico Ruivo, the panorama extends right up to the Bay of Funchal on a bright day. Do not forget to prepare food supplies and drinks for the excursion, as well as suitable walking shoes.
