Curral das Feiras or the 'Valley of Nuns' is a splendid valley hemmed in between mountains where some 5,000 people live in a village bearing the same name. Following an attack on the convent of Funchal, the nuns sought refuge in this remote area of the island, hence a village was born. Here, each person keeps a kitchen garden. Food specialities are the morello cherry and chestnut liquors. So far, access to the area has been long and tedious, the road is now tarred and the landscape is worth a stopover.
