There is a difference between insurance and assistance. The first will financially compensate the insured who has been subject to a risk provided for in the contract. Whereas the assistance will provide help and pay for the expenses linked to the encountered difficulty: medical expenses, repatriation, technical help, legal aid. Contrarily to certain insurances, an assistance contract is not compulsory.
The guarantees of Insurance contracts
Cancelling / modification of insurance: flight or holiday refund (totally or partially) in the case of a serious reason (death, illness, accident, loss of job) or in the case of a change of dates or of journey.
Baggage Insurance: guarantee against loss, stolen or damaged.
Repatriation Insurance/assistance: refund or intervention in case of a problem once there (usually included in insurances, bank cards, etc).
"Civil Responsibility" insurance: an obligation for car insurance, physically and financially, will compensate any person you may have caused harm to. When the damages caused to someone does not concern your vehicle, then your "multi-risk house insurance" should cover you.
The benefits of Assistance contracts
In relation to the person: repatriation, transport and admission into hospital in case of illness or accident, repatriation in case of death, transport expenses following the death of kin, a return ticket for your kin, if you are in hospital for more than 10 days.
In relation to the vehicle: tow expenses, car parts, repatriation of the vehicle or their passengers...
Sometimes: refunding of the car rental after an accident, refunding of hotel expenses due to a hospitalisation, financial help in the case of lost or stolen money, modalities concerning a burglary or an outbreak of fire at your lodging whilst travelling.
The terms of the contract can vary according to your trip, the length of your journey (maximum 3 month) or can even be annually. A simple cancelling of insurance for a short period costs between 12 and 25 pounds. A complete world guarantee will cost an average 2.5 to 5% of the journey's value. An annual contract will cost between 73 and 160 pounds according to the terms of the contract.
