Gastronomy has also benefited from the blend of several cultures: corn and manioc from the Tainos; flour, garlic, onions and other vegetables from the Spaniards, bananas and coconuts from the Africans. Puerto Rican cuisine is, however, often very seasoned. Bacalaitos (fried cod), empanadillas (meat, chicken or seafood pasties), queso frito (cheese balls), rellenos de papa (potato balls), sorullitos (corn flour balls) - fried food is the main part of the local gastronomy; but meat, seafood and desserts are also very present on restaurants' menus.
