Airports
Doha airport is located 5 miles away from the city centre. The only way to go into town is by taxi. It will cost you roughly QAR 15 (£3).

Security
Due to the tense situation in Saudi Arabia, it is recommended to be as discreet as possible when travelling in Qatar. Respect local customs by wearing appropriate clothing (no tight-fitting or low-cut clothes), do not speak loudly in public and avoid any comment on politics and religion. Be aware that it is prohibited to take pictures of public buildings and military installations. Importing alcohol is also prohibited.

Languages
Arabic (close to Iraqi or Syrian Arabic) is the official language. Persian and Urdu are also spoken. English is spoken fluently in cities and hotels.

Requirements
Your passport must be valid for six months after the return date. The visa is issued upon arrival in the country, at the Qatar airport. It is valid for two weeks and can be extended once in the country. It costs QAR 55 (£10.50) for an adult and QAR 25 (about £5) for a child.

Religion
Islam is the religion of the majority with 95% of the population (Sunnis constitute 85%). There is a minority of Christians and Hindus.

Currency
The currency is the Qatari Riyal (QAR). International credit cards are accepted everywhere and traveller's cheques can be easily exchanged. Automatic cash machines can be found in town and the banks are open from 7:30 am to 11:30 am from Saturday to Thursday.

Local transportation
Bus trafic is non-existent, except in cities. There is no railway network. The only way for visitors to travel in the country is to hire a car or taxi. Some taxis are equipped with a meter, for the others, negotiate the fare before leaving. There are some international car rental agencies. An international driver's licence is compulsory. The price of petrol is very low and the road network is exceptionally good. On the road, beware of camels crossing the road at night, and of the risk of bursting a tyre because of such high temperatures. You must not venture alone into the desert. Vehicles are no longer insured as soon as an accident happens off the usual known tracks. Dhows are a traditional means of local river transport, they can be used but there are not any official prices. Doha's dhow harbour is located near the Emir's palace, near the city centre. There are not any domestic flights.

Health
No particular vaccine is required. Vaccines against hepatitis A and B are recommended. Check that your DTP vaccine is up to date. In order to avoid risks of dehydration, it is essential to drink enough water. For stays exceeding a month, a medical check up and a test for AIDS are mandatory (certified documents issued by foreign medical authorities are not valid). Travellers will not be allowed to stay in Qatar if he/she tests positive to HIV/AIDS.

Electricity
220 V, 60 Hertz. Bring an adaptor.
