Almost the entirety of the Angkor Wat temples has been liberated from stranglehold of the vegetation which, over the centuries, had totally engulfed the buildings. Only the Ta Prohm temple retains the remarkable cluster of giant fig tree roots which enlace the stones. The site is at once unique, fascinating and creepy. The disproportion between man and nature is so apparent and so intense that the visitor feels somewhat insignificant and vulnerable. Unfortunately there is a project planned to relieve the temple of its tentacle-like roots, which will without doubt take away from the magic of Angkor Wat.
