The first, today called the small dam, was built in the 19th century during the British occupation in order to regulate the flooding of the Nile, which caused the disappearance of part of Nubia. During the 60s, a new ?Pharaonic' project saw the day; the construction, by the Russians, of Saad al-Ali, destined to replace the first dam. Lake Nasser was born, over 300 miles in length and in some places around 22 miles in width. This time the water buried the territories of Lower Nubia, but allowed for the evolution of the country in terms of providing sufficient water and electricity.
