Every Sunday mornings in the Baptist and Methodist churches the faithful gather to pray in unison. Gospel, the religious chant, whose roots date back to the 1930s, is part of the daily life of believers and references the New Testament. The word 'Gospel' is a compound of the words 'God' and 'spell'. It is important to dissociate Gospel and Negro spiritual. Gospel is inspired by jazz and the blues and developed in the large industrial towns. In contrast, Negro spiritual has its origins in the rural zones of America. A further difference is that Gospel chants are often accompanied by an orchestra whereas Negro spiritual is a capella (meaning to be sung without instrumental accompaniment). Keep your ears open and don't hesitate to push open the doors of a church to take part in one of these rhythmic masses.
