The cable-car is a real institution in San Francisco. Inaugurated in 1882, the cable-car enables the inhabitants to get to the summits of the hills without too much effort. The success of the San Francisco network lead to the expansion of the system and to the introduction of railways in many other cities. In the twenties, most city councils across the United States had abandoned the horse-driven vehicles for electric mechanically-towed cars. The Cable-Car Museum at 1201 Mason Street possesses a collection of historical cable-cars, photographies, mechanic displays and a souvenir shop run by 'friends' of the cable-car museum.
