San Francisco is a very pleasant city, that has kept remained of a manageable size. The geography and the particular topography of the city were a problem when it underwent its urban development. San Francisco is known as the city of the thousand hills. Of course it is not built over a thousand hills but forty, but this naturally complicates town planning projects which has kept the city from reaching the towering levels of New York for example. Walking around the street is a real sport and expect the numerous staircases to test your endurance! Yet the numerous curves of the city are what gives it a particular charm. It is easy to find one's way with a good map and within two days you'll feel at home. Important: always ask for the name of the street perpendicular to the one you are looking for. The streets are long and can cross the whole city; the streets have been planned out as a grid, like New York.
