Bruges is of course world famous for its canals which have accorded it the nickname 'the Venice of the North'. Called 'Reie', they make up part of the historic centre and confer the city with a romantic charm. They follow either natural courses or ones that have been dug or built, such as the interior canals which are situated on the traces of the first ramparts of the 1127 fortification.
Certain circle or cross Burges, while others link up with the town of Ghent, their original courses having been preserved. Take the time to contemplate the elegance of the medieval facades from the many bridges over the canals, where most of the buildings have either a historic, architectural or rustic value. For another point of view, take a river boat cruise of which there are many offered to the tourist.
