Otto Wagner Pavilion, Karlsplatz - Austria

Special feature Austria : Otto Wagner Pavilion, Karlsplatz

Otto Wagner Pavilion, Karlsplatz

Otto Wagner, founder, along with Gustav Klimt, of the Vienna Secession, was charged by the Viennese authorities to design the stations, bridges and viaducts of the city's underground system. In 1898, in collaboration with Joseph Maria Olbrich, he designed around 30 stations, two of which together face Karlsplatz; a couple of real little masterpieces making up the Jugendstil. This Viennese art nouveau was the result of a secessionist movement which reacted against the prevailing classism. Superbly restored, they are today classed as historic monuments, one of them housing an exhibition space and the other a café. Despite the elegance and refinement of this building modern techniques were not ignored during its construction. The panels with a floral motive were mass produced and then mounted on metal structures themselves prefabricated. A perfect example of art nouveau architecture, the Jugendstil sits perfectly opposite the imposing Karlskirche, St. Charles's Church. © Photo : Carlos Rodrigues
