Stephansdom Cathedral, symbol of Vienna - Austria

Special feature Austria : Stephansdom Cathedral, symbol of Vienna

Stephansdom Cathedral, symbol of Vienna

450 feet high, the south spire of St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom in German), affectionately called Steffi by the Viennese, has become the symbol of Vienna over the years. Situated on the site of a Roman basilica built in the 12th century, this neo-Gothic style edifice was the product of two centuries of work with the final touch being the posing of a dome on top of the unfinished north tower. All that's left of the original building are the Giant's Door and the twin towers. The famous spire as well as the superb diamond-shaped roofing with varnished polychrome tiles decorated with the two-headed eagle, symbol of the Habsburg empire, date from the 15th century. The magnificent roofing collapsed in 1945 during bombing and was, like the nave, painstakingly restored. An exceptional view rewards those brave enough to negotiate the 343 steps to the top of the cathedral. © Photo : Carlos Rodrigues
