The museum quarter, including the Naturhistorisches Museum - Austria

Special feature Austria : The museum quarter, including the Naturhistorisches Museum

The museum quarter, including the Naturhistorisches Museum

Situated on the beautiful Maria-Theresien-Platz, where the statue of the Empress Maria Theresa stands, Vienna's Natural History Museum houses rich prehistoric collections, of which the centre piece is the Venus of Willendorf, a prehistoric limestone statuette and symbol of fertility sculpted over 25,000 years ago. All Viennese school children know this piece, coming here in school trips just to see it. The building which houses the museum is remarkable with its splendid domes and has a twin right opposite where you'll find the Fine Arts Museum. Maria Theresa square gives directly onto the former stables of the imperial court, built between 1719 and 1723, which since 2001 have been home to the Museum Quarter, the biggest museum and cultural space in Europe. Of note here is the Leopold Museum and the Moderner Kunst Museum, the modern art centre. This latter, covering over 70,000sq ft is a pleasant place to come and unwind in the open-air restaurants, cafes and boutiques. One can also go and relax with a drink on one of the huge sofas, the ?enzis', upholstered each year in a different colour. © Photo : Carlos Rodrigues
