The Rathaus, Vienna's neo-Gothic city hall. - Austria

Special feature Austria : The Rathaus, Vienna's neo-Gothic city hall.

The Rathaus, Vienna's neo-Gothic city hall.

Built in a neo-Gothic style after the Brussels town hall, Vienna's Rathaus is an imposing building with its almost 100mhigh belfry crowned with the Rathausmann, the symbol of Vienna. Situated opposite the Burg theater on the Ringstrasse, the town hall is one of the emblematic monuments of Vienna, an unmissable landmark and meeting place in summer as well as winter. In the park opposite, a wide path lined with statues remembering some of the important personalities of Vienna's history crosses the park facing the Rathaus. The area is a much loved gathering point for the Viennese who, in winter, like to frequent the ice-rink and Christmas market, the Christkindlmarkt, the most important in the city, which has been occupying the town hall's square from mid-November until 24th December since 1975. In summer it is the setting for a free open air cinema festival, given over to lyrical art. For sustenance, you can sample gastronomic specialities from several countries. © Photo : Carlos Rodrigues
