A bit of Morocco in Tamerza - Tunisia

Special feature Tunisia : A bit of Morocco in Tamerza

A bit of Morocco in Tamerza

A white dome, palm trees and mud walls. A fort rises above land on the wadi shores and inside lies the village of Tamerza. The exposed bed of the wadi (or river, dry to the bone) waits in anticipation for the winter rain. The strength of the river can be felt by looking at the small pebbles' surface, smoothed by the water that covers the river's naked bed?the force of the river's flow rushing between its dry banks, teamed with the heavy rain beating down upon the mountains reinforce the image. The rest of the year however, the village is bathed in colour: a pink shade of ochre in the morning, a dusty pewter colour at midday and a fiery red at twilight. Like Chebika, Tamerza is an oasis, lost at the foot of the Atlas Mountains that appears isolated until one lays eyes on the Tamerza Palace Hotel. Rooms with a view, balconies giving onto the village and the nearby ruins are lit up as night falls on the arid landscape. Nothing is in view for miles around Tamerza; another abandoned village in 1969. Boasting a panoramic view that plunges any traveller into a dream, Tamerza is a painting lost in the midst of nature ? the most beautiful village of Tunisia.
