Fishermen, fishing nets and little coloured wooden boats. A lagoon buzzing with activity while the sun rises slowly, merging sky and ocean. Where could we be? In Djerba, the island that collapses under the hotels' weight, where tourists mingle while Djerba carries on as normal, not far from the ?menzel' buildings that line the beaches. Away from the hotels there are Midoun and Houmt bazaars, or ?Souks', where one can buy typical Djerba pottery. Tourists and locals live side by side. The former swim and simmer on the beaches while the latter pull their fishing nets out from the clear blue lagoon. The catch will be sold the following morning at the Souk of Houmt. Only Djerbans really know how to cook such a catch ? tomatoes, chili and onions to make a simple yet very tasty dish. The aroma of Djerba's cooking floating through the streets is everything you need to whet your appetite.
