Edified arches decorated with pink stones, secret folds and stairs with high steps smoothed by the comings and goings of beaten leather sandals. The interior of the Coliseum of El Jem evokes the antechamber of a palace that time has robbed of its treasures. Today the Coliseum is located right in the centre of the town of El Jem, a stark contrast to its location towards the end of the 11th century when it was built. This 30,000 capacity amphitheatre is the biggest, after the Roman Coliseum, to survive the antique period. Spend some time inside the Coliseum, climb the steps up to the top floor to get a bird's eye view of the structure. Don't miss out the passage under the first row lodges. These are dark corridors that lead to the stage where the fights took place; gladiators and sometimes even condemned Christians would be thrown in with wild animals.
