Iceland is the country of geysers, just as in Jules Verne's famous novel, 'A Journey to the Centre of the Earth.' Situated just over 70 miles to the northeast of Reykjavik, the site of Geysir is a geothermal valley which gave its name the phenomenon that is the geyser. A geyser is an explosive projection of boiling water. First, a turquoise bubble of water forms inside the small pool, the geyser. Then it shoots out a spectacular jet of steam and droplets.
It is possible so observe at Geysir this extraordinary feat of nature from just a few metres away. The sudden eruption of boiling water occurs at regular intervals of 10 minutes. It is due to the high temperature of the water that one must not get too close to the geysers. It is a spectacularly beautiful thing to watch for the first time and is surely one of the highlights of any trip to Iceland. What's more, Geysir can offer the original geyser experience!
