There are many types of wrap available in
Tunisia, including ones in essential oils such as rosemary, which are done on a floating bed of water. However one of the most popular and beneficial wraps available is the seaweed wrap. After having your skin prepared with a scrub, you are invited into the treatment room where you may be asked to put on some disposable underwear to make the treatment easier, although you are not obliged to do so if you're uncomfortable with the idea. You will then be laid down on a bed, upon a heated blanket, and the therapist will apply, starting usually from the heels, the seaweed paste (yes, they won't actually place raw seaweed on your skin!) up until the neck. Once completed, a plastic sheet will be wrapped around the body, in which you will literally sweat out the toxins in your body for around half an hour. Not only is the treatment cleansing, it is also said to be slimming as it redistributes fat deposits giving the impression of weight loss. Seaweed is also beneficial for cellulite, sagging and stretch marks and has also been known to help patients with troubles such as arthritis and water retention. Some thalassotherapy centres carry out the session in a steam box, rather than on a heated bed and, like with the hammam/scrub treatment, a seaweed wrap can be followed by a massage of essential oils.
