Mdina, the silent city - Malta

Located on a rocky hill in the centre of the island, this fortified city has been nicknamed the 'Silent City' because of the peace which reigns through its historical streets. Car traffic is limited inside the ramparts and from the terraces built on the angles of the ancient towers, you can catch a panoramic view that reaches right out to the sea. Malta is not big! Indeed it is only 17 miles long and 5.5 miles large. Renowned for its hotel the Xara Palace, the city of Mdina is recommended for an unusual break from the conventioanl animation which can be found at the seaside resorts of Sliema or St. Julian's. Not to be missed : watch the surrounding Maltese countryside redden as the sun sets from one the rampart cafés.
