Found between Canal Street and Manhattan Bridge, in the Lower East Side, the district of Colombus Park was first inhabited by Italians and Irish people. Renowned for being the worst area of Manhattan, it houses the first Chinese establishments in 1877. However the Chinese community will really take over only in the Fifties. Nowadays, English shop signs are rare. Shiny neonlights and ideograms, pagoda phone booths, food, products, language, very few things recall the United States. Not to forget the restaurants. Chinese food amateurs will find here the best addresses and also the cheapest ones in town. Among the events that shouldn't be missed, the Chinese New Year and its dragon parades, dances and rockets.
