Save the occasional bus or rental scooter, the people of Santorinii are content to get around on donkey. It is by this quaint means of transport that a great number of tourists chose to negotiate the ascent up to the small fort in Fira, the administrative centre of the island, rather than taking the funicular. All the way at the bottom, fishermen wait for travellers to take them to Nea Kameni with its hot water sources where a dip is compulsory. Those who are brave enough will climb back up to the top on foot, having to conquer 580 steps!
