Rising out of Santorin Bay is the smoking dome of the Nea Kameni volcano. Still active, it is one of the rare active volcanoes in the Mediterranean. However, the Nea Kameni volcano has not always been so calm; around 1500BC a terrible eruption occurred, destroying half the island. Steep pumice-stone and lava cliffs adorn Santorin's coast line. For thrill-seekers, the cliffs have become a veritable attraction. It is possible to swim in the underwater hot-springs which also contain sulphur, which also lines the islet of Nea Kameni.
