The sea has played a large part in Greek history and consequently the locals are reputed sailors, all with great respect for the sea, which has allowed them to survive all throughout history. Furthermore, the sea occupies a central position in Greek mythology-one of the most powerful gods is Poseidon, the god of the sea, who is also brother to Zeus, the god of all gods.
Numerous little fishing ports are strewn along the coast and on the Greek islands. Today, part of the population still lives off fishing, although it is becoming more and more difficult to survive as a fisherman. The catch of the day consists of octopus, calamari, mackerel, red mullet, sole, sea bream and grouper. The best places to enjoy a good plate of fish are the small taverns close to the port where you can choose the fish you would like by the kilo. Freshness guaranteed!
