Rural and well preserved,
Slovenia is a hiker's paradise! From one region to another, the abundantly green landscape camouflages a number of villages where the peaceful rhythm of countryside life is a pleasure to explore. From the rooster's song to the fruit trees loaded with cherries, plums, Mirabelle plums, pears or apples, from the enclosures where the animals are kept to make various hams, pâtés, sausages and roasted meats, the authentic atmosphere of Slovenian farming village life can be felt here. A good place to taste all these local specialities, which is also a great place to spend a couple of nights, is in a gîte or on a farm such as the Ratosa, 30 miles from Ljubljana. On the menu: ham, terrine, white truffle zlikrofi, roast chicken and of course, home-baked desserts. Call to book as it can get quite busy. Tourist Farm Ratosa, Gorice 3a. Tel: +386 5 753 61 10.
