The capital, Ljubljana - Slovenia

Special feature Slovenia: The capital, Ljubljana

The capital, Ljubljana
Doorway to the country, Ljubljana is one of the newer capitals of the European Union to be discovered without delay. The city, whose name is almost sung (pronounced "Lioubliana") is of a reasonable size, with around 300,000 inhabitants, a large proportion of whom are young. Emblems of the city, the dragons of the eponymous bridge have defended its entrance since the turn of the 20th century. Whether headed for the market or the city centre, their blue green silhouettes stand out from the bridge deck over the Ljubljanica. Also known as the 'river of seven names' (it has changed its name six times), the waterway that crosses the Slovenian capital gives it much of its charm. When green and in full blossom, its banks are a stage for animation, sauntering and peace reading in the summer. Whatever the time of year, the one-hour cruise allows the effortless discovery of the town's different bridges. Leaving from Tromostovje (Triple Bridge), the cruise heads in the direction of Dragon Bridge one way and towards Cankar quay in the other direction, to the café terraces full of live once summer has arrived. http://www.visitljubljana.com/.
