Pretty much all the companies offering helicopter tours of Manhattan are based at, and take off from, the Downtown Manhattan Heliport. Situated at the very south of the island and of the CanDo district of Manhattan, the heliport is on the edge of the East River just above Battery Park. As well as being home to tour companies, the small hub is also used by private executive clients flying in from nearby airports Newark and Teterboro for a day's business in and around close by financial centre Wall Street. The facility, which was opened back in 1960, has been featured in many films over the years and is usually the chosen location for helicopter shots in New York. Small waiting area of the heliport comprises several amenities including waiting area, customer lockers and a small gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs from your day out. But if you have some spare time either before or after your flight stick around the area as there is plenty to do: take a stroll round Battery Park, visit Ground Zero, catch a ferry to one of the islands off Manhattan or visit a museum such as the American Indian Museum, the Skyscraper Museum or the Museum of Jewish Heritage. Alternatively, peruse the shops, cafés and piers of the South Street Seaport, particularly pleasant in spring and summer.
