Perched up high at almost 10,000ft in a wild region, Kuelap recalls the myth of the forgotten cities in the lost forests in the clouds. Leaving the coastal road and entering the Amazonian territories throws up evidence of the Chachapoyas pre-Inca culture, contemporaries of the Chimus. In a hostile environment and a cold and wet climate stands the impressive town fortress. Constructed from limestone on two gigantic platforms, the citadel spreads over 15 acres and consists of 20 buildings, one of which is the castle (castillo) whose defensive walls reach 82ft. The three entrance doors to the castle only allow one person to pass through at one time.
