Those vegans amongst you will know how difficult it is to find a restaurant on your travels with vegan options, let alone a whole vegan restaurant! Well here is a Canadian address to keep dear: Aux Vivres in Montreal. This 100% vegan eatery, located along the street which divides the north of the city from the south, boulevard St. Laurent, was the very first of its kind in Montreal and has been growing ever since it was founded in 1997 by Marie-Pierre Michaud in smaller premises on rue St. Dominique. Today it is owned and operated by chef Michael Makhan and his brother Liam who serve up bulging chapati sandwiches, copious rice bowls, of which the most famous if the dragon (shredded beet, carrot, daikon, lettuce, sprouts, red cabbage, dulse, toasted sesame seeds, dragon sauce &grilled tofu), salads, burgers and other dishes (we enjoyed the chickpea and potato curry). The restaurant also does a mean smoothie with our favourite being the
Bombay banana which comprises banana, soy coconut milk, ginger, masala and dates. Juices, coffees and desserts are also available as are organic teas to finish your meal off with. It goes without saying that the ingredients used in the kitchen are as far as possible seasonal, organic and local
Open from 11am til 11pm everyday of the week, Aux Vivres is a bustling, diner-type joint attracting a mix of clientele from young, hipster couples to well-to-do families. The staff are not only as sweet as pie but also enthusiastic and knowledgable about the menu. Brunch is on offer from 10am to 4pm on the weekends and there is a take away deli area adjacent to the restaurant proper. Even if you are not a vegan, you won't be disappointed upon leaving this Montreal institution.
