Set on stilts, the modest wooden restaurant sits just above the small beach of Praia Da Galé just outside Albufeira. Not many tourists know about this beach; most prefer the proximity of Albufeira's long and wide beaches. The restaurant is open all day from 9:00am to midnight and is a fairly popular haunt with the locals, which is a tell-tale sign of quality.
There is indoor seating for windy evenings, as well as a large wraparound wooden terrace looking out onto the beach - the perfect spot for watching the sunset over a Sagres or Super Bock beer. The restaurants in Portugal tend to serve a selection of spreadable tuna, sardine and cheeses, with drinks at the beginning of a meal - although these extras won't set you back by too much, you may want to tell your waitor that you don't want it all if you want to be able finish your main! Meat and fish options are on the menu here, although most people tend to go for the fish - apart from the occasional nostalgic (usually British) tourist who will order a burger and chips.
The specialities of the region are grilled sardines, sea bream and clams and let us warn you: you have not lived until you try the food here! The portions are generous and usually come with boiled or baked potatoes coated in olive oil, sea salt, herbs and garlic or boiled vegetables. We highly recommend a side salad of tomatoes, which are also delicious.
The perfect setting for a meal, be it for lunch with the children or with friends, or a romantic sunset dinner in the evenings, Restaurant Praia Da Galé is the ideal spot. In fact, while lunchtime is busy with beach-goers and families in swimwear, in the evenings you will notice a change in atmosphere as a chic well-dressed clientele settles into the plastic chairs.
Fish and seafood vary from 10 to 16 euro, while shrimp and prawns are a little more expensive (35 to 80 euro). A pint of the local tipple costs about 2 euro. A truly winning formula that comes extremely highly-recommended this week!
