Norwich may not be the first place on your list of UK cities to visit, and who could blame you? Barely known outside the boundaries of Norfolk, it's not a destination that calls to the seasoned traveller. But (and it's a big 'but'), give it a chance. Though small, the city's charming boutiques and excellent choice of restaurants will have you sliding back through time into a rose tinted age of cobbled streets and friendly service...
Right in the heart of the city centre, and if you wander up the right little side street, you may just find the Waffle House. Situated in a gorgeous Georgian listed building, this snug little restaurant is a particular favourite amongst the locals and is always ridiculously oversubscribed, both for lunch and dinner. If you get the choice, ask to sit downstairs by the window - the perfect spot from which to watch the world go by.
Menu-wise, i''s very important to get your decision right. The Bolognese Waffle with cheese sauce fills all the requirements of a hearty meal while the hummous and avocado is an obvious favourite with the vegetarians. Others however, the ham with cheese sauce and mushrooms for example, leave something to be desired. Get a side salad to really complete your meal - cheese fans head straight for the blue cheese sauce, it really is spectacular. Dessert is another must, and impossible to recommend just one. Banana, toffee and/or ice cream do not disappoint, whatever your final choice.
All the waffles are handmade to order, with a choice of plain or wholemeal, and keep it very simple - but that's not always a bad thing. It's the wholesome, good quality and - for the most part - organic food at reasonable prices that keep the regulars coming back and the visitors full of recommendations.
