Reputed for the quality of its wood, Reunion is well-renowned for its furniture, particularly since the the creation of the Compagnie des Indes. Founded by Colbert in 1666, the company monopolized the commerce between France and the various trade posts on the Roman-India route. In the 17th and 18th century, it ran the spice trade, crockery and furniture importation from Reunion, in particular. As far as cabinet designing is concerned, the type of wood that was and is most used is tamarin and the models made then are timeless, thanks to copies made today. The famous ?planter' chair with its undulated arms, for example, reminds us of a rocking chair. Several workshops are recommended in the area around l'Etang-Salé-les-Hauts (a lake) and Rivière-Saint-Louis (a river).
